As you can see, the seasons bring a thousand and one changes, including in terms of clothing trends. The problem is that in the world of fashion, this renewal is almost constant. This is what we call "fast fashion" (because we are bilingual).
And as you probably guessed, fast fashion has repercussions on the environment. According to the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, the industry's immense footprint goes beyond the use of raw materials. In 2015, greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from textile production reached 1.2 billion tonnes of CO2 equivalents, 21 more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. Furthermore, it is estimated that 22 million tons of microfibers will be added to our oceans between 2015 and 2050 due to this industry.
We could create a movement against this industry, but when more than $800 billion in revenue are at stake, it is difficult to get businesses and our governments to act to care for our planet.
Solutions to fast fashion
But don't worry, it's not all bad news! It's a difficult task, but it's not impossible, especially thanks to the extended producer responsibility (REP). It has been successfully introduced in France since 2007.
To put it simply, companies are obliged to establish a recycling and waste management system for the clothes they put on the market, or to make a contribution to an organization that will financially support third parties specialized in their treatment and recovery. But we are also aware that we cannot leave everything in the hands of governments and companies when it comes to taking care of the environment. It all starts with our small actions!
Unless you're on the beach at d'en Bossa in Ibiza and walking around naked. But that's not a viable solution. So we can choose a more environmentally friendly way of consuming, such as investing in quality clothing that we know will last, produced by companies that are conscious of environmental issues, without forgetting the well-being of their workers. These companies are part of what is called "slow fashion" (always bilingual).
Slow fashion
Slow fashion is the way of thinking, making and consuming fashion in a conscious and intentional way, favoring the care of production processes, seeking to ensure the quality of each product created so that it is durable and sustainable over time. It proposes a slowdown, compared to the excessive production and consumption installed by fast fashion, those that have led the fashion industry to be the second most polluting on the planet.
Do you want to know which brands are part of it? You can find them on Slow We Are, the slow fashion label ! Le Slip Français, N'GO Shoes and Laines Paysannes are some of the labeled brands! With these brands, fast fashion is no longer in season (and it's not over)!
